Harry's Journal - Part Six
Luskan Underground

Hammer 21, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Sword Coast, Luskan, The Jagged Dagger Inn

Once again I am overwhelmed! So many things to write down…this city is full of surprises and i don’t mean the smelly ones in the sewers. I even managed to locate some hidden notes in the handbook Master Tumult gave me … they seem to be intentionally cryptic and hint at strange experiments involving extra-dimensional items and gates … highly advanced stuff. I fully intend to look into it more as soon as I find the time.

First of all I had to relocate … since both Thornalf and Olo are staying at the Jagged Dagger there was no sense in me staying on the other side of the city no matter how good the extras at the One-Eyed Jax where. No free rooms however and i had to share a room with Thornalf but I don’t mind. The dwarf might snore a bit but i get to study the symbols on his face while he sleeps. Ha!

On more serious matters now, we went down at the sewers again yesterday, looking for the goblins. The rain did not make it any easier but we had help from a helpful stranger, called Quinn, who offered to give us a tour of the city’s sewers. I mean who would have thought they would have guides for the sewers … the wonders of the big city never seize to amaze me!

We did find the goblins (their leader vanished when things got ugly and he was definitely not a goblin although judging by his white hair he might be old) and they did give us some trouble, especially those big rats with the stinky breath … but it appears we were better than the two poor guys we found dead. One was particularly interesting as he was apparently a fellow wizard because he did have a staff and a spell book but I can not be certain as I did not find a diploma. Even so, his spell book was full of interesting spells although I will take some time and a lot of gold to have them copied into my spell book. Whoever that guy was he used a strange notation method which was vastly different from Master Tumult’s.

I am also keeping his staff. I think it looks more wizard-like than my orb … perhaps I can modify the staff to hold my orb on top in such a way so that I can detach it if there is need… good think I have my tools with me.

Hammer 21, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Sword Coast, Luskan, The Jagged Dagger Inn, Late at Night

I do not like to speak ill of the dead but I am not certain that that Dittir fellow was a REAL wizard (even overlooking the fact that he had NO diploma) … I am having trouble making any of the spells in his “spellbook” work … Take that “Mage Armor” spell for example. I’ ve been trying for 2 hours and yet I can’t make it as any type of armor – plate would be nice for example but at this point I’d settle for an evening gown and high heels – all I am getting is a blue glow… field-testing is required I suppose.

Had some luck with the “Unseen Servant” spell. Well, at least I managed to have something spill my jar of water all over my bed so I am confident that at least the “unseen” part works.

However, I am confident that I can use the “Detect Thoughts” spell and the “Locate Object” correctly. I used the first on Olo and I swear i heard the clinging of coins so i am pretty certain that worked except that he kept thinking of himself as Jacob … or Oly … that is one confused Halfling, I can tell you that! Even Master Tumult admitted once that I was “somewhat competent” when it came to divination … probably got it from grandma Ursula on my mother’s side. Pa always said she was a witch…

Session 06 : Lil Thieves Big Sewers
Act I : The City Of Sails

Hammer 20, 1484 DR
Luskan, Mirabar District Sewers

The captured goblin proved to be completly useless, so they throw it back to the dirty waters in the Luskan sewers. Harry, Thornalf and Olo, return to the surface of the city and decide to rest until the next morning. The dwafr and the halfling share a room in the Jagged Dagger Inn, while the wizard goes back to the One Eyed Jax inn. There, he studies his “Apprentice Handbook” and finds hidden notes in the pages, written from someone called Aoth Fezim. The first note he decodes writes:

Placing a bag of holding inside an extradimensional space created by a Heward’s handy haversack, portable hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The gate originates where the one item was placed inside the other. Any creature within 10 feet of the gate is sucked through it to a random location on the Astral Plane. The gate then closes. The gate is one-way only and can’t be reopened.

The next morning Quinn, sees the wizard at the inn and decides to spy on him. He follows him to the Mirabar District of the city inside the Jagged Dagger Inn. Some members of the Taerls talk about the Rethnor’s return the murderd guard near the Cliffside Cranny and the retaliation against those who wronged them. Little did they know that all of that was a plot, weaved by the anarchy mind of a little halfling thief. The companions plan their next actions regarding the goblin thieves and Quinn drops into the conversation offering them a treat and his help as a guide into the sewers. The four of them descent in search of the goblins lair. Their new companion, tracks down the thieves and guides them to their hideout, where about a dozen thieves search through the stolen merchant goods. Their leader, surrounded by giant dire rats, is talking to a shady figure, hidden in the dark. The companions ambush the goblins, setting of an alarm, drawing the goblins on a spot where the gain advantage over them. They wipe out the goblin thieves, but the shady figure who appears to be a drow, escapes. They retrieve the stolen goods and they also find the bodies of two adventures, who seems to be recently deceased. Olo finds a letter on one of them and swiftly hides into his pocket. After a long day into the dirty sewers, they return to the inn, they split the loot and send a word to mr Bram Shocker to meet them.

On Goblins

This is preposterous. People in this town are afraid of goblins. I run in to some with mr bear, while we where using the sewer entrance into the city and he told me to hide. HIDE. FROM GOBLINS. HA!Anyway I found the old gang. Drank a bit. Killed some more goblins. I am still seeking meaning though. Comradery and feasting is all and good but what is the reason to leave the woods and enter society again if you don’t share your vision. I envision a new society born after the thunderstorm. Old roots cut, new seeds planted. The rain will nourish what the thunder allows to remain. And here is what I do not get about this city. Too many damnable clans and subclans from what mr Diploma explains. It is true. I myself saw their numerous banners and sigils… I am infuriated that my kin is forced out of their home and work. Time to bring the hammer and the blade to something other than goblins. To something that hiding from might actualy be a sound idea… to not follow.

Harry's Journal - Part Five
A handful of Ships ... or Gangs ... or Organizations

Hammer 20, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Sword Coast, Luskan

Luskan is far more exciting than I imagined. It is full of colorful shops, friendly people and interesting badges. Just as I woke up I inadvertently met two nice fellows from Ship Suljack (they have that strange goat-like skull as their symbol) when I spilled their beers by mistake. They did seem a bit upset at that moment but i offered to buy them drinks and they got very friendly. They even told me to look them out should I want a job. I was even considering it, until I told them I was a wizard and they started laughing at me! Laughing! Why, the nerve of some people – even after I showed them my diploma… so I put them to sleep. I still paid for their beers though.

Learning that Orilei was going to work at the Cutlass when I already paid for two nights here was a bit of let-down but I quickly forgot about it as I visited the small bookshop I spotted yesterday. Although it pained me to do so, I parted with two of my books for a measly 15 gold pieces. The old man that owned the shop looked scared when I told him that I was a wizard but he was happy enough when I magically cleaned up his shop. I am starting to think that people do not trust wizards here … as strange as it may sound I may have to keep it more private.

Shortly afterwards I ran into another of the Coinspinners member. I do not remember his name but he asked me whether I wanted to participate in some hand-hand fighting apparently for money. I haven’t done that for a few years, not since that time at the Spring Fair in Leilon when I lost a tooth fighting that big guy from Waterdeep. Considering how quickly you run out of gold here I may have to take him on his offer.

I decided to move north towards the Mirabar district to look for Thornalf when I met two more guys from yet another ‘Ship’, Ship Kurth this time. They also seemed taken aback by the fact I was a wizard but were kind enough to direct me towards the piers should I ever want a job… They also offered me 25gp for every Rethnor head (more for info) I brought them but I can’t imagine many Rethnor would be willing to part with their heads…

I finally managed to locate Thornalf and Olo near the Jagged Dagger which seemed a nice opportunity to celebrate although Thornalf does not seem to need an excuse for that. Running into Oloward there was a rather unfortunate coincidence especially since the fat bastard tried to warn me away from Orelei (claiming that she was responsible for fighting among others). Not like there is anything between me and Orelei but of course I would never tell him that.

All taken into consideration however, going into the tavern was a good choice. We managed to get a job from a Ship Taerl (those with the bloody gates symbol) representative who offered us 350gp to find out who was stealing cargo from some dwarves. I haven’t seen 350gp since that time I paid Master Tumult to take me on as an apprentice – and that was Pa’s life-shavings.

Session 05 : Dirty Business
Act I : The City Of Sails

Hammer 19, 1484 DR
Luskan, North & South Bank

Thornalf Ulfgar, along with Jimmy Bear, enter a catacomb in Ciffside Cranny, and find themselves into the sewers of the Mirabar District. There they encounter a group of filthy goblins killing most of them, though some flee carrying stolen goods. A shady figure that seemed to order around the goblins also vanishes. After a while they exit the stinky underground part of the city and Jimmy departs.

“I’ll be in the Rat’s Alley. Search for the red door. So long mate!”, says the sailor.

Harry Westra, wakes up in the One Eyed Jax Inn. It’s already noon an hastily he get down to the loft, where a waitress named Leianna Gunther, informs the wizard that his friend Orelei, will be working as a dancer in another inn called, The Cutlass. Some sailors try to bully the wizard while he enjoys his beverage. Harry finishes his milk, casts a sleep spell, knocking them unconscious, lift up his hat and goes his way. He visits the market and meets interesting people like Rick The Slick, a member of the Coinspinners and arena bookie. He learns from some Kurth soldiers that the Rethnors are traitors who conspired with the Zhentarim, for control over the city. There is a bounty of 25gp per Rethnor head. The wizard, the dwarf and the halfling bumps on each other on the Harbor Cross bridge and share their information, on their way to the Jagged Dagger Inn, in the North District. There they find the merchant Oloward Fletcher, who warns Harry to be careful of that exotic dancer. The merchant says that she has a weird effect on men, like a witch. On a nearby table a member of the Taerls, called Bram Shocker talks with dwarf merchants about a problem they have with the sewer thieves, these days. The company offers their help and Bram agrees to pay them 350 gp if they deal successfully that problem. Before they descent into the worst smelling part of the city they make a stop at Thalorin Manymetal’s warehouse, so Thornalf can deliver the letter from the clan Hammerhand. Harry forges magically a duplicate seal, and Thornalf secretly reads the letter before he deliver it.

  • Hammer 7, 1484 DR Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
    Waterdeep, Clan Hammerhand Ironforge

Waterdeep is furious with Luskan. I don’t know what these captains have in their minds, but there are too many pirate attacks in ships with the Lords Alliance flag on them. Some Lords blame the Captains of Luskan for those attacks. Others will follow.

They are sending a paladin of Torm, to look into that matter and withdraw the waterdavian guards from the city. They say he has orders directly frm Lord Dagult Neverember.

In the North an Orcish Horde is moving west, leaving nothing but death in their passing. In the Battle Of Frozen Vale, citadel Adbar fell and king Bromm lost his head, from Ork King Hartusk. I hear that citadel Felbar is already besieged.

You should pack and leave Luskan, now. Head for Neverwinter. I will make arrangements, for your shortcoming.

    Let the hammer fall,
    Dagradoth Hammerhand
    son of Varadoth

Into the sewers, the three companions, investigate the catacombs, searching for the thieves. They trigger a trap, that creates an alarming sound all over the slimy corridors. After a moment, more than a dozen goblins surround them and attack. The creatures are slaughtered and one of them is captured. Thornalf bags it up and they return to Jagged Dagger Inn for an interrogation and a hot bath.

Some hours earlier, the Harper spy Quinn, following Dominic’s directions, meet the waitress Leianna Gunther, in One Eyed Jax Inn. She says that the target is Captain Zorg’s Manner and slips the backdoor key to the Kurth Captain’s house, into the Harper’s pocket. Before his departure, the waitress informs him about a slave trade that will occur at midnight of the 21st of this month, on the Open Shore Port. On his way out Quinn, is intrigued by a newcomer that used magic to put to sleep three dangerous looking sailors. He secretly follows and spy on him for a few hours. At night he reports to Dominic and begins his mission. From the rooftops he sneaks up into the balcony of the Zorg Mannor. The spy moves through the shadows investigating the house. He manage to extract three numbers from the scrolls on the captains desk, I X VII. In the gallery room, he deactivates the alarm and behind a painting he uncovers a safe box. He uses the combination and unlocks it. He retrieves a sack with Zhentarim coins and a drow ring. As he leaves the house, a guard suspects his presence in the back yard bushes. The guards sees the spy and yells,

Quinn, strikes first and slit his opponents throat swiftly. Then, he jumps over the fence, and hides into the dark alleys of the City Of Sails.

Harry's Journal - Part Four
The City of Sails

Hammer 19, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Sword Coast, Luskan, One-Eyed Jax

Finally warm. I honestly do not remember the last time I actually felt warm – well, we were warm at the cabin but that does not count because it was TOO warm. After days of feeling hunted, at last I can feel somewhat … safe. A bit ironic for this city I think … Luskan was not how I imagined it would be. It is certainly impressive but it looks run down, abandoned in a strange sort of way. Of course the poverty, the prostitutes, the staked people on the walls, the shake down at the gates and the gangs do not help to build the image of the city … Still, the Arcane Tower is here and as soon as I get that Rethnor thing straightened out, that’s where i am going!

So to sum up the last day, we reached the Northern gate at dawn, payed our way into the city to a bizarre-looking human specimen by the name of Grima (‘of the many pockets’ I would add) who claimed he was a member of the Bloodgates who actually are named Taerl … I had to pay for Orelei too since the poor girl had no money and then pay some more to get some unreliable information from the misshapen gatekeeper.

We dropped off Damara at the Temple of Tymore (which was functioning as a fortress of some kind) where we had the added benefit of meeting Mike (‘the Coin’). It seems that there is another group called the Coinspinners who control the city’s arena. It might be interesting to visit at some point although Mike hinted that they deal in information as well.

The One-Eyed Jax where Orelei was supposed to dance was the last stop. I have to admit that it is an … impressive place. The girls are nice (the clientele not so much) but the room is rather expensive at 2gp per night even if you take the extras under consideration (not sure what that entails yet, as I was too worn out last night to care).

It seems that money may be a problem however and one that I will not be able to ignore for long. I am here less than a day and half my funds are gone … everything is too expensive here. I may even have to sell a few of these books. I will have to find cheaper room too but I’ve already paid for another day and besides I want to make sure Orelei has settled in.

Session 04 : Sunrise In Luskan
Act I : The City Of Sails

Hammer 18, 1484 DR
Luskan, North & South Bank

The wizard’s magic owl, Splinter, flies above the pine trees watching for enemies. Beneath him, his master’s company reach the end of the forest. From the hill they can see the walls of Luskan. They gaze upon the City Of Sails for a moment, as it comes to life in the morning sun and then Jimmy Bear, turns to the other survivors.

“This path leads to the North Gate. The Taerls occupy that region, so until I find out who’s my friend or foe, I’ll enter the city from a less formal entrance. Through the woods, towards the Open Shore, there is an opening in the walls. Cliffside Cranny it is called. It is guarded, ya, but hell I know me way around my City. With a little luck we’ll go unnoticed. Anyone care to join me, mates?”, announces the sailor.

“There are gates in the cities so people, can enter from. We are not thugs and we will not act like ones.”, replies the knight and heads towards the North Gate.

In a confusing moment as Richorn and Jimmy, take different paths, Harry, with Oloward Fletcher and the ladies follow the knight and Thornalf stays with Mr. Bear, while no one notices the halfling, hidden in the bushes, sneaking behind the sailor and the dwarf, towards the crack in the walls.

The North Gate guards, seem more like mercenaries than city watchmen. They bare the Taerl symbol, a Blooded Iron Gate, on their leather armors and they only care about collecting the toll. The hunchback tax collector, though, chats a little with Harry, exchanging information for coins. Harry, overwhelmed, enters the big city. Oloward Fletcher, the merchant, heads for Mirabar District to mingle with the dwarf merchants and Harry helps Richorn to gather information about the fate of the Waterdavian Guards. Apparently, a while ago they were all infected by the Plague, the inn they were staying was burned down and they were sent to the Fang Island, where all the plague victims end up. The severe wound on the paladins face, compels him to visit a local healer, thus Harry is left in the service of the two lovely ladies. He accompanies Damara, to the Clearlight, a temple dedicated to Tymora, only to find that a group called Coinspinners, fortified the building and made it their base of operations. One of them, Mike The Coin, who seems quite friendly to Harry, suggests they visit the slums where the few followers of Lady Luck, reside. There, the priestess joins the community of the not so fortunate residents of the city, offering her help. Finally, the wizard and the exotic dancer, arrives in the One Eyed Jax inn, where Harry quickly rents a room for the evening and falls asleep on the silk sheets, alone, rejecting the “special offer”, of the house.

Olo Quickskin, secretly follows his two companions to the ruined walls, in the west side of the city, until he loses them behind the huge chunks of stone. The halfling passes through the breach and hides in the street by the change of the watch. Then he puts on his innocent and naïve face and runs toward the guards, yelling,

“Oh, mister can you please, point me to the butcher?! I need to buy some food for my grandpa, he’s very sick and I’m all he’s got!”

“So you’re all alone and your paps is the only one whose waiting for ya? Hmm, give me your money boy, and I’ll bring you something for your old man!”, says the guard, with a smirk trying to grab the halfling from his belt.

Olo, rolls over and run away into the alley. The guard chases him cursing, until he corners the little one and draws his sword, threatening to kill him if he doesn’t handle his coins. Olo, draws a dagger from his sleeve and pierce through his knee. Then, he tumbles on the crates, positioning himself behind his enemy and backstab him until he drops dead. He looks at the dying man, plotting a way to get away with this unfortunate event. He takes a rug with the guard’s blood and paints on the wall the Rethnors symbol, followed by the word “RETURN”. He heads to the Red Dragon Post of the Mirabar District and overhear two members of the Barams, bargain a big weapon deal with the blacksmith, Malik Hammersmash. The halfling invites himself into the conversation, introducing himself as Pilo Ironheart and learns from the big guy, called Big Larry, that an accountable force of his gang, will leave in a few days for the northern villages where a few barbarians recently settled. Olo offers, a better deal if they buy from one of his own collaborators. The big guy seems to be persuaded and accepts, rather roughly though,

“Ya better come with the stuff at our headquarters in Red Dragon Post, by noon tomorrow, or they will find you with an iron in your heart . . . Pilo Ironheart! "

Harry's Journal - Part Three
Little cabin in the woods ... look at it burn...

Hammer 16, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Sword Coast, North-East of Luskan

The good news is that we found other survivors from the ship, Orelei among them … the bad news is that two of them were eaten by wolves before we had time to intervene, including Sir Richorn’s last squire – the other one apparently drowned with the boats. And of course it started to rain, which made burying the poor men a bit easier and us a lot more uncomfortable.

Thankfully Jimmy Bear spotted a cabin in the woods a while back so we will be heading there.

Hammer 16, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Cabin in the Woods, Sword Coast, North-East of Luskan

This is without doubt, the best day of my life. We found the cabin which looked strangely abandoned until we stumbled upon the owners’ corpses stashed in a hidden underground study/stash. So the cabin being abandoned stopped being so strange but it did pose the question of who offed the owners and why … the basement was full of merchandise along with slaver logs which I think may not be entirely legal … Thornbalf is suspicious of Jimmy but he has given us no reason to doubt him yet.

The best part however is that I finally got to cast that spell that Master Tumult was badgering me about, the one that makes magical thinks glow. As a result I found a bottomless bag in the study (which is really more useful than it sounds) and which I promptly filled with books … none of it magical but still a wizard needs his books.

As soon as I finish this I am casting that “Alarm” spell on the doors and windows and hopefully it will not go off every time i sneeze this time. I’ve never felt so much like a wizard in my life … Master Tumult would be so proud.

Hammer 17, 1484 DR, Year Of The Awakened Sleepers
Cabin in the Woods, Sword Coast, North-East of Luskan

I don’t have much time … the cabin is on fire and we are trying to escape through the window in one of the back rooms. There are men in the woods that are looking to kill us … I think it has to do with the attack on our ship as well …

…too much smoke in here … Sir Richorn is badly hurt … I am also running out of bolts …

… Orilei climbs out of windows very gracefully …

Session 03 : Cabin In The Woods
Act I : The City Of Sails

Hammer 17, 1484 DR
Woods North Of Luskan

The survivors of Maria Alayna, find themselves in front of the seemingly abandon cabin in the Luskan woods. Jimmy Bear, kicks the wooden door, breaking the lock and entering the dark lounge. The others follow him quickly, eager to take cover from the downpour. Harry snaps his fingers and a small fire starts in the stone fireplace. Then he draws geometric shapes on the door and windows and he starts weaving an alarm spell, after all better be safe than sorry as his master, Tumult, used to say. Thornalf discovers some provisions in a small warehouse and the women cook dinner, while the dwarf “tastes” the ale, to see if it’s still good. And it is good, but he continues the “taste” process, anyway. Oloward, the fat merchant, is writing some calculations in his little diary, to assess his losses from the shipwreck, apparently he lost almost everything and he burst into tears. Jimmy, sits calm with his muddy boots on the table and smokes some of the Luskan blend. Richorn is trying to repair the front door, furious with that inelegant, rude, poor excuse for a sailor. Suddenly a blunt noise comes from an inner room. The men grab their weapons and barge into the bedroom. In the candlelight they see the halfling, crouching in front of a bedside table, with a broken vase next to him. Holding his bruised forehead, turns to his companions, saying

“Someone hit me! Someone was there! Look, look I’m wounded!”

“You shouldn’t sneak around, make noise and then mess us up, ya little sneaker! Dun nogada fahir!”, responds, the angry dwarf mixing dwarvish with common language.

“Oh! There’s no one there! That’s what Mr. Thornalf said!”, Harry, proudly translates.

Since, there was nothing disturbing they start leaving the room giving suspicious looks to each other. The dwarf notices a plank bouncing on the floor and turns to the wizard who is still in the room.

“Close the door discretely, Mr.Diploma.”, whispers to Harry.

The draw the carpet away and they uncover a secret hatch. A rotting smell comes from the basement below and the they both want to find out what causes it.

“I have a bad feeling about this.”, says Harry as they descent.

They discover more provisions, some crates, barrels, an old bookcase with an artistic carved desk in front of it and some disturbing iron cages with chains. Finally, they spot the source of the smell. A pile of three dead bodies, rotting. Some one must have killed that poor family a few days ago. Some thrown papyri draws the wizards attention. They seem to be some kind of slave logs. Quickly he puts them in his robe, and starts a ritual to detect any remnants of magic. His efforts pay off and he locate a magic bag beneath the bookcase. That bag opens a tiny extra-dimensional gateway, holding all its container in the astral space. The dwarf notify the others of the situation and they decide to bury the dead outside. Afterwards they sleep lightly and they take turns guarding the cabin.

Olo Quickskin is swimming in a sea of silver and gold, he gets out in a beach with pearls instead of sand and passes through exotic trees with Rubin for berries. In the middle of the beach there is a door. He takes out his thieves tools and unlocks it. He opens it slowly and then, a screeching noise like the awful screams of a bitching banshee, wakes him up! Bloody pirates, screaming and crushing invade the cabin through the doors and windows. One of them troughs a flaming bottle and the whole place burst into flames. The companions bring death upon the invaders, but more torches are coming behind the trees. They flee from the back door into the woods. Most of them got away with minor wounds except from the knight whose face was half burned in the fight. They run and they run, leaving the burning cabin behind them while the sun rises above the smoking chimneys of the City Of Sails.

Those pirates threaten us in the most sideward way I have ever seen from humans. I don’t understand why would someone not threaten you clearly and directly if they so wish. We dwarves are straight when we use threats. “I will crush your empty skull like an eggshell” , “I will make you eat more crap than a trollish shithole”… In any case, they want us to be silent. So be it. I have neither a quarrel with them nor do I scare from half eaten “warnings”. Mr diploma will be around, and so will that flamboyand blonde tinman. As for that little sneaker… well he is funny enough to have around. He also has weed. All I now need is some ale and some salted pork. Maybe the mage can conjure some up… I hear some wolfhowls in the distance.

That cant be good…
